Experience Mountain Zebra National Park

Established in 1937, Mountain Zebra National Park has expanded to encompass over 28,000 hectares of rugged amphitheaters, deep ravines, and rolling Karoo grasslands. The park stands as a testament to exceptional conservation: its founding population of just a handful of zebras has grown into a thriving herd, allowing hundreds to be relocated to other reserves. Rising significantly into the Bankberg Mountains, the park offers striking panoramic vistas and challenging mountain passes. Unlike more commercial safari destinations, it is a peaceful, uncrowded landscape that seamlessly blends rugged 4x4 loops and ancient San rock art with unique predator tracking experiences.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a 4x4 to explore Mountain Zebra National Park?
No. The main rest camp and the iconic Rooiplaat Loop are accessible via standard passenger sedans or well-graded gravel roads. However, the park features specialized mountain 4x4 loops (such as the Sonnekop and Jakkalsfontein trails) that strictly require a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle.
Can you stay overnight inside the park boundaries?
Yes. SANParks operates the main Mountain Zebra Rest Camp, which offers comfortable self-catering family cottages, luxury rock chalets built into the ridge, the historic Doornhoek Guest House, and a shady caravan/camping site with electricity points.
Is the cheetah tracking activity guaranteed?
While the rangers use specialized telemetry equipment to locate the cheetahs' collar signals, they are completely wild predators moving through rugged terrain. Sightings are highly successful but never absolutely guaranteed. Advance booking is mandatory.
